My Heritage, Our Heritage

This spring, the Teen Council is working on a project comparing different perspectives on heritage. We will be interviewing members of the community, asking them about their own heritage to find out what heritage means to each individual. In turn, we will be comparing what we find to see if we can get a better idea of what heritage means to the community as a whole.

To give us a broader range of perspectives to talk about and to make our project more interesting, we would like your help! Feel free to comment and tell us what heritage means to you. How would you define heritage? What do you think are the most important aspects of your own individual heritage? What do you think are the most important aspects of your community's heritage? You can answer any or all of these, or just write about what comes to mind when you think of the word "heritage."

Thanks for your input!

  1. When I think of heritage I think of history, customs, stories, neighborhoods, food, and family. My heritage makes me who I am, and for me is less about my ethnic background and more about my cultural upbringing.

  2. Heritage is an intellectual and academic concept pertaining to inheriting and transmitting ideas and information. This can be genetic inheritance (as this is also a transmission of information), but also includes all of the elements of culture. For instance, one can have a specific cultural heritage defined by customs, or receive heritage from sub-culture, such as the heritage of a musical tradition. The key term here is "transmission".

  3. Heritage to me speaks to tradition. Like tradition, I believe heritage needs caretakers, people who will talk about it, value it, and insist upon its presence in their lives. When I think of heritage, it's hard for me to imagine it without people.
